Long ago, the Bhagavat was at the gathering place of the Buddhas when Mañjuśrī arrived, just as the Buddhas were each returning to their original places. Only one woman sat near that Buddha, absorbed in samādhi. Mañjuśrī addressed the Buddha, "Why can this woman sit near the Buddha while I cannot?" The Buddha told Mañjuśrī, "You need only awaken this woman and make her arise from samādhi, and you can ask her yourself." Mañjuśrī circumambulated the woman three times, snapped his fingers once, and then lifted her up to the Brahmā heaven, exhausting all his spiritual powers, but he could not bring her out of samādhi. The Bhagavat said, "Even if there were a hundred thousand Mañjuśrīs, they could not bring this woman out of samādhi. Down below, past twelve hundred million worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, there is Bodhisattva Ābhāsvara, who can bring this woman out of samādhi." In an instant, the great being Ābhāsvara welled up from the earth and bowed to the Bhagavat. The Bhagavat instructed Ābhāsvara to go before the woman and snap his fingers once. Thereupon the woman emerged from samādhi.
