From antiquity onward, the dynamic conditions manifested by the buddhas and patriarchs were settled according to the facts, with originally no superfluous words. Tearing open the skull, exposing the eyeballs, they only wished for everyone to directly take responsibility for it, not seeking it from another. If one is an adept of the path, as soon as it is brought up, one knows where it lands. There is completely no door to enter, nor any grade of steps to ascend. Swinging one's arms, one crosses the barrier without asking the barrier guard. Have you not seen Xuansha say: 'No gate is the gate of liberation; no intent is the intent of the person of the Way'? And Baiyun said: 'Knowing clearly, it is just this; why cannot one penetrate it?' Talk like that is also smearing red clay on cow's milk. If you penetrate the Wumenguan, you have already made a fool of Wumen; if you cannot penetrate the Wumenguan, you also let yourself down. As it is said, 'The mind of nirvāṇa is easy to comprehend, but discriminating wisdom is difficult to clarify.' When discriminating wisdom is clarified, family and state are naturally peaceful. Respectfully noted on the fifth day before the lifting of the retreat, in the first year of the Shaoding era, by Bhikṣu Huikai, Wumen, eighth-generation descendant of Yangqi.
