師初至河北住院。見普化克符二上座。乃謂曰。我欲於此建立黃蘗宗旨。汝可成褫我。二人珍重下去。三日後。普化却上來問云。和尚三日前說甚麼。師便打。三日後。克符上來問。和尚昨日打普化作甚麼。師亦打。至晚小參云。我有時奪人不奪境。有時奪境不奪人。有時人境俱奪。有時人境俱不奪。

When the Master first arrived in Hebei to dwell in a monastery, he saw the two senior monks Puhua and Kefu, and thereupon said to them: 'I wish to establish the ancestral school of Huangbo here. You two should assist me.' The two men said 'Take care' and went down. Three days later, Puhua nevertheless came up and asked: 'What did the Venerable say three days ago?' The Master struck him at once. Three days later, Kefu came up and asked: 'Why did the Venerable strike Puhua yesterday?' The Master also struck him. That evening at the informal assembly he said: 'Sometimes I snatch away the person but not the environment; sometimes I snatch away the environment but not the person; sometimes I snatch away both person and environment; sometimes I snatch away neither person nor environment.'
