一日示眾。會佛法者。如恒河沙。百草頭上。代將一句來。自代云俱　師凡對機。往往多用此酬應。故叢林目之。曰一字關云。

One day he instructed the assembly: "Those who understand the Buddha Dharma are like the sands of the Ganges. At the tips of the hundred grasses, speak a phrase on their behalf!" Answering on their behalf himself, he said, "Together."
Whenever the master encountered a student's capacity, he often used such responses. Therefore the monastic groves called it "The One-Word Barrier."
