Venerable Dongshan was named Liangjie. Born to the Yu family of Kuaiji, he shaved his head under Chan Master Mo of Mount Wuxie. He attained the Dharma from Chan Master Yunyan Tansheng. At first he resided at Dongshan in Junzhou, where he provisionally established the Five Ranks to adeptly receive those of the three faculties, greatly proclaimed the single voice to broadly spread it to the myriad classes, brandished a precious sword across his path to shear the dense thicket of various views, and wondrously harmonized and broadly penetrated to cut off the strained interpretations of heterodox views. Later he obtained Chan Master Caoshan Benji, who thoroughly understood the clear aim and wondrously sang fine maxims. Their Dao matched like lord and vassal, partial and upright interchanging. From this, the profound style of Dongshan spread throughout the realm. Therefore, the lineage masters of all quarters joined in revering and honoring it, calling it the Caodong lineage.
