The master, because of observing Master Dongshan Liangjie's sayings on the Five Ranks, composed a preface and verses:
"As for the mystery of words, words cannot reach it; as for the subtlety of the purport, the purport cannot be reduced [to concepts]. Yet generations are never lacking in worthy ones, and the times do not obscure virtue. Not lacking in worthy ones, the worthy are exalted; not obscuring virtue, virtue flourishes. The former worthy of flourishing virtue was Master Liangjie of Mount Dong, whose high renown reverberated after Caoxi. Expediently he opened the Five Ranks, skillfully guiding those of the three faculties, greatly expounding the single voice and broadly propagating the myriad types. Drawing forth horizontally the precious sword, he cut down the dense forest of various views; subtly integrating and expansively penetrating, he severed the forced interpretations of divergent doctrines. Throwing wide open the lock of the gate of emptiness, raising high the mysterious lamp in the dark room, broad and encompassing, rolling up and unfurling with ease, he is truly a mirror for gods and humans, a ford and bridge for the essential path of liberation. If one does not have golden capacity, how could one enter his room? In subtle stillness hanging dew, he fully clarified talk beyond the ordinary patterns; asking for instruction and dropping the needle, he brought about mutual integration within the subtlety of things. Striking with wind and thunder upon the sea, the great waves remain serene; shining like the bright sun in the sky, demons and monsters leave no trace. Whether concealing the jewel in the clothes or displaying the pearl in the topknot, this is not for fame and profit in the human world, but to honor and manifest the hidden ancestral teaching beyond things. Coming from afar to ask, how could I refuse with modest words? I have therefore narrated the ancient foundation to instruct present students. Although responding in words that are simple and plain, the mysterious principle is without deficiency. The Five Ranks are fully marked, the Three Mysteries are directly pointed out, encompassing dharma-realms as many as the sands of the Ganges to fully converge in the source of awakening, and embracing measureless fine dust particles to entirely return to the true limit. However, the wise will easily understand, while the confused will find it difficult to comprehend.
"To investigate and seek the Five Ranks, it is crucial to know:
The slightest movement of a hair already runs counter.
Who can wield the vajra breaking through the scabbard?
Only Nezha possesses the foremost capacity.
Lifting the eyes, he immediately causes the three realms to become serene;
Shaking the bell, he brings the nine heavens into submission.
Subtle integration within the apparent penetrates mutual interpenetration;
If you hesitate for an instant at the blade's edge, you lose your majesty."
