眾僧既聞，識大師意，更不敢諍，依法修行。一時禮拜，即知大師不久住世。上座法海向前言：「大師！大師去後，衣法當付何人？」大師言：「法即付了，汝不須問。吾滅後二十餘年，邪法撩亂，惑我宗旨。有人出來，不惜身命，定佛教是非，竪立宗旨，即是吾正法。衣不合傳，汝不信，吾與誦先代〈五祖傳衣付法頌〉。若據第一祖達摩頌意，即不合傳衣。聽吾與汝誦。」頌曰：

Having heard this, the assembly of monks recognized the Master's intention and dared not dispute any further, but cultivated in accordance with the Dharma. Bowing together, they knew that the Master would not remain long in the world. The senior monk Fahai came forward and said: "Master! After the Master departs, to whom will the robe and Dharma be entrusted?" The Master said: "The Dharma has already been entrusted; you need not ask. More than twenty years after my parinirvāṇa, heterodox teachings will cause confusion and confound my tenets. If someone comes forth, not sparing bodily life, to determine the right and wrong of the Buddhist teachings and establish the tenets, that is my true Dharma. The robe is not suitable to be transmitted. If you do not believe it, I will recite for you the 'Verses of the Transmission of the Robe and Bestowal of the Dharma by the Five Patriarchs' of past generations. Judging by the meaning of the verse of the First Patriarch, Bodhidharma, the robe is not suitable to be transmitted. Listen, and I will recite them for you." The verses said:
