Question: Since all dharmas are empty, who cultivates the Way? Answer: If there is a 'who', that one must cultivate the Way. If there is no 'who', then there is no need to cultivate the Way. The 'who' is also the self. If there is no self, encountering objects, right and wrong will not arise. 'Right' is the self considering itself right, while the object is not right; 'wrong' is the self considering itself wrong, while the object is not wrong. The mind being without mind is to penetrate the Buddha's Way. Encountering objects without giving rise to views is called penetrating the Way. Encountering objects and directly penetrating to their root source, this person's wisdom eye opens. The wise rely on objects and not on the self; hence they have no grasping, rejecting, opposition, or accord. The foolish rely on the self and not on objects; hence they have grasping, rejecting, opposition, and accord. Not seeing a single thing is called seeing the Way; not practicing a single thing is called practicing the Way. Where every place is no place, where the place of action is without conditioned dharmas, that is seeing the Buddha. If one sees marks, one sees ghosts everywhere; grasping at marks, one falls into hell. Contemplating the Dharma, one attains vimokṣa. If one perceives, remembers marks, and discriminates, one undergoes cauldrons of boiling water, burning coals, and the like, directly seeing marks of saṃsāra. If one sees the dharmadhātu-nature, that is nirvāṇa-nature. Free of memory, thought, and discrimination, that is the dharmadhātu-nature. Mind is not rūpa, hence it is not existent; functioning without cease, it is not non-existent. Functioning yet constantly empty, it is not existent; empty yet constantly functioning, it is not non-existent. Then a verse is spoken:
