48.20

又問。本識等雖無力能熏自種。而能親生自種。故。現行本識等得自生種。為因緣者。既不熏自種。如何能生自種。又熏與生何別。

He also asked: 'Although the root consciousness and so forth have no power to perfume their own seeds, they can directly produce their own seeds; therefore, the actualized root consciousness and so forth are able to produce their own seeds, acting as the cause-condition. Since they do not perfume their own seeds, how can they produce their own seeds? Furthermore, what is the difference between "perfuming" and "producing"?'
