Answer: Opening and uniting follow conditions; it is neither identical nor separate. Because conditions gather, there is uniting; because conditions disperse, there is opening. Opening and uniting are merely conditions; rolling up and unrolling have no substance. Conditions are merely opening and uniting, and conditions are also fundamentally empty. The one and the other have no cognition of each other; grasper and grasped are both tranquil.

The verse of the Ghanavyūhasūtra says: / 'Just as gold, stone, and the like / Originally have no water-form, / Yet when combined with fire, / They flow like water, / The storehouse consciousness is also like this: / In substance it is not a dharma of transmigration, / Yet conjoined with the various consciousnesses, / It transmigrates together with dharmas. / Just as iron, because of a lodestone, / Turns and moves all around, / While both are devoid of thought, / Yet appear as if they had thought and perception, / The ālaya and the seven consciousnesses / Should be known to be likewise. / Bound by the rope of conditioning, / Without a person, it seems as if one exists; / Pervading the bodies of sentient beings, / Traveling through the skandhas and destinies, / Like iron and a lodestone, / Mutually they do not know each other.'
