Answer: The view of a personal self is like the six aggregates and seven sentiments—ultimately without substance. The view of a phenomenal self is like a gandharva city or mirage water—thoroughly empty alone. As the sūtras and treatises clarify the two kinds of selflessness: First, the selflessness of persons (pudgala-nairātmya). In Sanskrit it is *pudgala*, rendered in the Tang language as 'frequently taking rebirth in destinies' (shùqǔqù). This means that sentient beings arouse afflictions and generate karma, which serves as the taker; the future five destinies are called the destinies. Although they repeatedly arouse afflictions and generate karma, transmigrating through the five destinies, there is entirely no sovereign, actual, autonomous function; therefore it is called selflessness. Second, the selflessness of phenomena (dharma-nairātmya). This means that although the substances of all dharmas sustain themselves and give rise to understanding in sentient beings, they also lack any supreme nature of actual, autonomous function; therefore it is said to be selflessness.
