The Preface to the Contemplation of the Dharmadhātu states: 'The dharmadhātu is the fundamental substance of the body and mind of all sentient beings. From the origin onward, it has been spiritually luminous, thoroughly open, vast, empty, and tranquil—simply the realm of the one reality. It has no form or appearance, yet the great thousandfold [world] is arrayed within it; it has no boundaries, yet it contains the myriad existents. Manifest between the mind and eyes, its characteristics cannot be seen; resplendent within the dust of form, its principle cannot be divided. Without the eye of wisdom that penetrates phenomena and the luminous knowledge free from thoughts, one cannot see that one's own mind is so spiritually pervasive. Thereupon, matching the dharmadhātu-nature, the Avataṃsakasūtra was spoken, enabling all sentient beings to see within their own bodies the vast wisdom of the Tathāgata and realize the dharmadhātu. And so, even a single tip of a hair of the Buddha's body pervades all and contains all. Worlds are like this, sentient beings are like this, every speck of dust is like this, every thought-moment is like this, and every phenomenon is like this. There is not a single phenomenon that definitively possesses an intrinsic substance and stands independently.'
