99.5

大乘攝論云。問。何以故。此識取此識為境。答。無有法能取餘法。雖不能取。此識。變生。顯現如塵。譬如依面見面。謂我見影。此影顯現。相似異面。

The Mahāyānasaṃgraha states: "Question: 'Why does this consciousness take this consciousness as its object?' Answer: 'No phenomenon can take another phenomenon [as its object]. Although it cannot take [it], this consciousness transforms and arises, manifesting like an object. It is, for example, like seeing a face by relying on a face and saying, "I see an image." This image manifests, resembling a different face.'"
