Answer: One should distinguish this by four alternatives. The Yogācārabhūmiśāstra says: "Some accomplish the ālayavijñāna, but not the evolving consciousnesses, namely [those in] mindless sleep, mindless fainting, entering the attainment of non-conception, entering the attainment of cessation, and those born in the heaven of non-conception. Some accomplish the evolving consciousnesses, but not the ālayavijñāna, namely arhats, pratyekabuddhas, non-retrogressing bodhisattvas, and tathāgatas who abide in states with mind. Some accomplish both, namely the remaining sentient beings abiding in states with mind. Some accomplish neither, namely arhats, pratyekabuddhas, non-retrogressing bodhisattvas, and tathāgatas who enter the attainment of cessation or dwell in the realm of nirvāṇa without remainder."
