Again, an ancient master asked: Since the five consciousnesses condition only real form, just as when [shapes such as] long and short appear before one based on the objective sphere of form, and the eye faculty is undamaged, at this time does the eye consciousness condition them or not? If you say it conditions them, one commits the error of the five consciousnesses conditioning nominal [forms]. If it does not condition them, why is it that when one closes one's eyes one does not see them, but when one opens one's eyes one sees them?
