An ancient master asked: 'Now, when conditioning the Buddha's sounds, names, phrases, and syllables, is it that one's own ear consciousness and manovijñāna condition the names, phrases, and syllables so that it is called hearing, or is it that one's own eighth consciousness must first take the Buddha's fundamental sound as substance, transform and raise a nimittabhāga, and then the ear consciousness and manovijñāna take the eighth's nimittabhāga as substance, transforming their own nimittabhāga to condition it, so that hearing is attained?'
