Answer: Although it is not transformed by consciousness, because it is the real nature of consciousness, it is also named vijñapti-mātra. Tathatā transcends words, and is neither identical with nor different from the conceptualizing consciousness. It is not like material form and so forth, upon which grasping can arise; therefore, it is not a basis of grasping. It is not spoken of here. Yet viewed remotely and distantly, words can also serve as the basis for grasping, because latter-day students rely upon them to give rise to grasping. Furthermore, since tathatā is not transformed by consciousness, it might seem not to be vijñapti-mātra. It is not because of transformation that it is named vijñapti-mātra; rather, because it is not separate from consciousness, it is properly named vijñapti-mātra.
