Now, the wondrous gate of the one mind and the correct principle of vijñaptimātra: the transformer and the transformed penetrate both internal and external; citing one illustrates all, gathering them without exception. Like the array of stars and constellations not departing from empty space, or the myriad trees and sprouting plants all returning to the earth, it can uproot the roots of doubt and open the gate of faith, brighten the illumination of wisdom and wash away the dust of passions. If one's faculty of thought hesitates and has not yet achieved superior understanding, one must rely on questions and answers to gradually enter complete penetration. True gold still requires smelting to be perfected; beautiful jade still relies on polishing to emerge. The Private Notes on the Avataṃsaka states: 'Those who contemplate the extremely profound Dharma-gate with right mindfulness are of two kinds of people who can wither the great tree of the twelve links of dependent origination (dvādaśāṅgapratītyasamutpāda): first, reviewing the old without forgetting; second, inquiring into and receiving new dharmas.' This is what it means.
