Answer: Non-Buddhists do not comprehend that all phenomena are the conditioned combination of causes and conditions that form the various aggregates. Whatever is done is entirely the aggregate of consciousness; yet over the aggregates, they cling to the existence of a real self, possessing unhindered mastery over enjoyment and use, and call it the 'spiritual lord'. Within a continuity that only seems permanent and seems one, they say there is a spiritual nature—this is the non-Buddhist doctrine. If one understands that it is formed by the inner and outer combination of causes and conditions, is transformed by vijñaptimātra, and is manifested as apparent objects—that is, the eighth consciousness sustaining without interruption and seeming to have continuity—this is the doctrine of the Buddha-Dharma. Non-Buddhists do not know this; taking it to be really existent, they are deluded about the principle of naturelessness and cling to the folly of the view of an existing self.
