The Nirapekṣa Sūtra says: “At that time, Śāriputra, knowing the thoughts in the minds of the assembled multitude, immediately addressed these monks, saying: ‘Venerables, why do you utter these words: “From this day forward, our bodies have no Buddha, the World-Honoured One; we follow non-Buddhist teachers and renounce the world to become śramaṇas”?’
At that time, the monks answered Śāriputra: ‘From this day forward, we respectfully serve the six teachers. That to which all return is simply the single characteristic. Not relying on the six sense entrances, we therefore do not see diverse kinds of teachers, nor do we conceive of renouncing the world to become śramaṇas.’”
Exposition: Relying on the six sense entrances creates difference, falsely distinguishing the heterodox and the orthodox. Returning to the single characteristic as the source, both other and self are extinguished. One who understands like this may be called truly renouncing the world.
