The Sūtra of the Questions of the Devaputra Praśāntaviniścayapratihārya says: “The devaputra Praśāntaviniścayapratihārya said: ‘Mañjuśrī, what kind of suchness is equal to defilement and purity?’
Mañjuśrī said: ‘The suchness of emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness. Why? Because nirvāṇa is empty. Devaputra, it is like the space inside an earthenware vessel and the space inside a jewel vessel: they are neither two nor different. Just so, devaputra, the emptiness of defilement and the emptiness of purity are both the same single emptiness, neither two nor different.’”
Exposition: Although the vessels are not equal, space originally has no form. Although defilement and purity are distinct, how has their nature ever differed? One who understands like this enters the gate of signlessness, suddenly awakens to true emptiness, and does not fall into [gradual] cultivation and realization.
