Venerable Xingshan said: "From antiquity onwards, the patriarchs and Buddhas have transmitted to one another the Dharma of the one mind, sealing mind with mind, transmitting no other Dharma. The first patriarch pointed to a single phrase to explain directly, just as a dragon spouting water creates a ford, the ford fills to become a river, and ultimately the great sea; the dragon is the source of the water. From this, know that from now onwards, students who transmit to one another the Dharma of the one mind all speak concisely. When calling it mind, one must not seek a separate Buddha; when it is Buddha, one must not further seek mind. Therefore, if a person believes that their own mind is Buddha, all the words spoken by this person will be able to turn the wheel of the Dharma. If a person does not believe that their own mind is Buddha, all the words spoken by this person slander the vaipulya Great Vehicle. Therefore a sūtra says: 'Attaining bodhi outside the nature is like pressing sand to seek oil; it is not the true cause of oil.'"
