The preface to the Bore deng lun says: “Originally, the myriad things are non-existent and the one mind is like an illusion. Because the mind is like an illusion, though active, it is ever quiet. Because things are non-existent, though arising, they are unarisen. Therefore the sage speaks of the illusion-like mind reflecting non-existent things: understanding that things are not things, the nature of each and every thing is empty; knowing that the mind is without mind, the substance of each and every mind is still. A person of penetrating insight attains their ultimate convergence and forgets what they rely upon. Thereupon, conceptual proliferation, without waiting to be dispelled, is naturally eliminated; the contemplation gate of non-attainment, without borrowing cultivation, is already entered. Vast and boundless, it neither exits nor abides, without abiding and without reliance.”
