Chan Master Zhijue, whose nature was enlightened and whose faculty was rounded, possessed abundant talent and reached the bounds of learning. His accumulated habits from past lives tallied with all dharmas; his dissemination in the present age accorded with all Buddhas. He regarded others as himself; he contemplated others' minds as his own mind. He once composed the Collection on the Common Return of the Myriad Good Practices in three fascicles—upper, middle, and lower—in order to encourage all who have karmic affinity. Be they eminent figures in crimson and purple robes, lineages of the Dharma in black and yellow robes, good men and good women, those of lofty conduct and lofty talent: as long as they are utmost in reverence and utmost in diligence, there is no distinction between noble and base. It is truly a good medicine for benefiting living beings and a key ford showing how to seek the Buddha; it gathers the Dharma-words of various sūtras and various treatises to serve as an exemplar for those not yet awakened and not yet knowing. Encouraging and guiding in every way, observing cultivation with scrupulous care, it will forever remain the balance for Brahmā's flowers and the standard for the Chan lineage.
