今法慧院智如藏主，夙資仁性，躬踐聖猷。見賢而同己之賢，見善而同己之善。總明師之論譔，興異世之楷撫，福利茲深，方便不少。而又自傾囊楮，遽出賤貲，肇為倡率之隆，仍募高明之助；勝緣既集，能事必行。因鏤版以成編，貴修身而有監，將垂不朽。繆托非才，如振性昧，洞微言、睽樞要；猥承嘉請，難克固辭。聊述紀綱，敢逃誚讓。時聖宋熙寧五年閨七月七日序

Now, Master of the Canon Zhiru of Fahui Cloister has long possessed a benevolent nature and personally practiced the sagely guidelines. Seeing virtue, he aligns with the virtue of others; seeing goodness, he aligns with the goodness of others. Compiling the treatises and writings of enlightened masters, he raises an exemplar for a different age; the blessings and benefits here are profound, and the upāya not few. Moreover, emptying his own coin-pouches and readily putting forth his humble resources, he took the initiative in leading this grand undertaking, and went on to solicit the aid of the eminent and bright. Noble affinities having assembled, this capable task was bound to proceed. Carving the printing blocks to complete the volume, he values self-cultivation with a mirror to reflect upon, seeking to transmit it to imperishability. Undeservedly relying on one without talent—as my nature is benighted, unable to penetrate subtle words and missing the pivotal essentials—yet having unexpectedly received this kind request, I could hardly decline with firmness. I briefly set forth the basic outline, daring not to shun reproach. Prefaced on the seventh day of the intercalary seventh month in the fifth year of the Xining reign era of the Sagely Song [1072 CE].
