'The treatise states: "Question: 'Why is it that the power of a single thought of the Buddha can sever all obstacles?' Answer: 'Just as a single scent of candana can transform forty yojanas of an eraṇḍa forest so that it is entirely fragrant; or just as when someone uses lion sinews for lute strings, when the sound is played once, all other strings snap and break. If a person practices the recollection-of-the-Buddha samādhi within the bodhicitta, all afflictions and all obstacles are entirely severed and destroyed.'" The Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra says: "Whether for one day and night, or seven days and nights, perform no other actions, but with a dedicated mind recollect the Buddha. If recollection is small, one sees small; if recollection is great, one sees great." Also, the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra says: "Mañjuśrī asked the Buddha: 'How does one quickly attain anuttarā samyaksambodhi?' The Buddha answered: 'There is the single-practice samādhi. Those who wish to enter the single-practice samādhi should, in a secluded place, abandon all distracted thoughts, grasp no appearances, focus their mindfulness on one Buddha, and exclusively chant the name. Facing squarely in the direction where the Buddha resides, if one can continue mindfulness of one Buddha thought after thought, then within that recollection one will be able to see the past, future, and present buddhas. Day and night expounding continuously, wisdom and eloquence will never be cut off.'" Thus we know that the Buddha's power is inconceivable and his mysterious penetration is rarely fathomed, like a magnet attracting iron or water running to a river. Through the power of the root of compassion and goodness, such things are seen; for those who take refuge with a dedicated mind, the spiritual efficacy is vividly clear.'
