"Fourth: regarding 'Fusion and identity of nature and characteristics,' the Wuliangyi jing says: 'Immeasurable meanings arise from a single dharma.' The 'dharma' spoken of is precisely the true mind. The single true mind is endowed with the two meanings of unchangingness and according with conditions. Unchangingness is nature; according with conditions is characteristics. Nature is the essence of characteristics; characteristics are the function of nature. Because people do not understand the root source, they falsely give rise to disputes. Today, those who disparage characteristics do not recognize the mind's function; those who disparage nature do not recognize the mind's essence. If one can thoroughly fuse them, both grasping and rejecting will cease.
