Master Yuantong Ne said: “The life of a lame man depends on his staff; if he loses his staff, he stumbles. The life of a ferryman depends on his boat; if he loses his boat, he drowns. Whenever a person among the groves possesses no self-restraint and relies on external power to give himself weight, once he loses what he relied on, he cannot avoid the disasters of stumbling and drowning.” (*Unofficial Records of Mount Lu*)
