Yuantong Ne said: “In the past, Chan Master Baizhang Dazhi established the monastic grove and instituted monastic regulations, wishing to remedy the corrupt abuses of the semblance age. He could never have known that students of the semblance age would steal the monastic regulations to destroy Baizhang’s monastic grove! In high antiquity, although people nested in trees and dwelled in caves, every person disciplined himself. After Dazhi, although there are high halls and vast mansions, every person abandons himself. Therefore it is said: ‘Safety and peril depend on virtue; rise and fall depend on destiny.’ If virtue can guide, what need is there for a monastic grove? If destiny can be relied upon, of what use are monastic regulations?” (*Unofficial Records*)
