The Old Man Shun said to Master Lu Yuan of Fushan: "One who wishes to investigate the unsurpassed, wondrous Way must become firmer as poverty deepens, and become stronger as old age approaches. One must not follow common vulgarity, unlawfully snatching fame and profit to the ruination of one's supreme virtue. Jade is valued for its pure luster, and therefore vermilion or purple cannot alter its substance; the pine displays its nature in the cold of the year, and frost and snow cannot wither its integrity. From this we know that integrity and righteousness are the greatest things in the realm. As your demeanor is worthy of esteem, can you fail to exert yourself? The ancients said: 'With unhindered wings flying alone, solitary in the wind without a peer.' Indeed it should be so!" (From the Extensive Records).
