浮山遠和尚曰。古人親師擇友。曉夕不敢自怠。至於執爨負舂陸沈賤役未嘗憚勞。予在葉縣備曾試之。然一有顧利害較得失之心。則依違姑息靡所不至。且身既不正。又安能學道乎（岳侍者法語）。

Venerable Yuan of Fushan said: "The ancients drew close to masters and chose friends, not daring to be negligent day or night. As for tending the hearth, pounding the mortar, and doing base and menial chores, they never shrank from the labor. I personally experienced all of this when I was at Yexian. However, once a mind arises that calculates advantage and disadvantage, weighing gain and loss, then one becomes compromised and complacent, stopping at nothing. Moreover, if one's own conduct is not upright, how can one study the Way?" (From Dharma Words to Attendant Yue).
