遠公謂道吾真曰。學未至於道。衒耀見聞馳騁機解。以口舌辯利相勝者。猶如廁屋塗污丹雘。秖增其臭耳（西湖記聞）。

Master Yuan said to Zhen of Daowu: "Before one's learning has attained the Way, to flaunt what one has seen and heard, give free rein to intellectual understanding, and strive to surpass others through eloquence and sharp debate is just like smearing vermilion and cinnabar on an outhouse: it only increases its foul stench."
