Master Yuan said to Head Monk Yan: "The mind is the master of the whole body, the root of the myriad practices. If the mind does not achieve wondrous awakening, delusional emotions naturally arise. Once delusional emotions have arisen, one's perception of principle is not clear. When perception of principle is not clear, right and wrong become confused and disordered. Therefore, in governing the mind, one must seek wondrous awakening. When one is awakened, the spirit is harmonious and the qi is tranquil, the demeanor is reverent and the expression dignified; delusional thoughts and emotional concerns are all fused into the true mind. Governing the mind in this way, the mind naturally becomes spiritual and wondrous. Thereafter, when one guides beings and points out delusion, who will not follow and be transformed?" (From The Veritable Records of Fushan).
