演祖曰。衲子守心城。奉戒律。日夜思之。朝夕行之。行無越思。思無越行。有其始而成其終。猶耕者之有畔。其過鮮矣。

Patriarch Yan said: "A monk guards the citadel of his mind and upholds the monastic regulations, reflecting on them day and night, practicing them morning and evening. Practice does not exceed reflection; reflection does not exceed practice. Having a beginning and bringing it to completion is like a plowman having balks between fields; his errors will be few indeed."
