演祖曰。所謂叢林者。陶鑄聖凡養育才器之地。教化之所從出。雖群居類聚。率而齊之。各有師承。今諸方不務守先聖法度。好惡偏情。多以己是革物。使後輩當何取法（二事坦然集）。

Patriarch Yan said: "What is called a monastic grove is a place that molds sages and ordinary people, nurturing talents and capacities; it is that from which teaching and transformation issue forth. Although people dwell in groups according to their kind, guiding and unifying them, each has his master's transmission. Nowadays, various quarters do not strive to uphold the rules of the former sages, but indulge biased personal likes and dislikes, often using their own views to alter things. What then are the later generations to take as their model?" (Two entries; from The Tanran Collection).
