1.37

演祖見衲子有節義而可立者。室中峻拒不假辭色。察其偏邪諂佞。所為猥屑不可教者。愈加愛重。人皆莫測。烏乎。蓋祖之取捨必有道矣（耿龍學跋法語）。

When Patriarch Yan saw a monk who possessed integrity and righteousness and was capable of establishing himself, he sternly rejected him in the abbot's room without showing any pleasant expression or gentle words. But when he observed one who was biased, perverse, fawning, sycophantic, whose actions were vulgar and could not be taught, he cherished and respected him all the more. No one could fathom this. Alas! The Patriarch's adopting and rejecting certainly had a method to it!" (From Academician Geng's Postscript to the Dharma Words).
