演祖曰。古人樂聞己過喜於為善。長於包荒厚於隱惡。謙以交友勤以濟眾。不以得喪二其心。所以光明碩大照映今昔矣（答靈源書）。

Patriarch Yan said: "The ancients delighted in hearing of their own faults and rejoiced in doing good; they were adept at tolerating offenses and magnanimous in concealing others' evils. They were humble in making friends and diligent in helping the multitude, not dividing their minds over gain or loss. Therefore, their brilliance was magnificent and grand, shining upon both past and present." (From A Letter in Reply to Lingyuan).
