Huitang did not accept the invitation to Guishan. Chen Yingzhong of Yanping sent a letter encouraging him, saying, ‘When the ancients were abbots, there were no bureaucratic affairs; they selected those of virtue to reside in the post. Those who undertake this responsibility must awaken these people with this Way, never changing on account of power, position, renown, or gain. Nowadays, students have not clarified the Great Way and each rushes toward aberrant studies, drifting into names and characteristics and consequently being moved by sound and form. The worthy and the unworthy are jumbled together and cannot be distinguished. This is precisely the time for experienced elders to harbour a commiserating heart and take the Way upon themselves as their own duty; blocking and turning back the hundred rivers would certainly not be difficult. As for retreating to seek tranquility and making ease one's main pursuit, this is what is liked by those who only perfect their own persons, not what the monastic grove hopes of you.’ (From Gleanings of Lingyuan)
