1.71

英邵武謂晦堂曰。凡稱善知識。助佛祖揚化。使衲子迴心向道。移風易俗。固非淺薄者之所能為。末法比丘不修道德。少有節義。往往苞苴骯髒搖尾乞憐。追求聲利於權勢之門。一旦業盈福謝天人厭之。玷污正宗為師友累。得不太息。晦堂頷之。

Ying of Shaowu said to Huitang: "In general, being called a kalyāṇamitra who assists the buddhas and patriarchs in propagating the teaching, causes monks to turn their minds toward the Way, and transforms customs and mores—this is certainly not something that superficial persons can accomplish. The bhikṣus of the final age do not cultivate the Way and virtue, and have little moral integrity and righteousness. They often accept bribes, act corruptly, wag their tails and beg for mercy, pursuing reputation and profit at the gates of the powerful. Once their negative karma is full and their blessings are exhausted, gods and humans detest them; they taint the authentic lineage and bring burden upon their teachers and friends. How could one not heave a great sigh?" Huitang nodded in agreement.
