真淨曰。比丘之法受用不宜豐滿。豐滿則溢。稱意之事不可多謀。多謀終敗。將有成之必有壞之。予見黃龍先師。應世四十年。語默動靜未嘗以顏色禮貌文才牢籠當世衲子。唯確有見地履實踐真者。委曲成褫之。其慎重真得古人體裁。諸方罕有倫比。故今日臨眾無不取法（日涉記）。

Zhenjing said: "According to the Dharma of bhikṣus, enjoyment and use should not be abundant; if abundant, they overflow. Gratifying matters should not be sought after too much; if sought after too much, they will end in failure. Where there will be completion, there must surely be destruction. I observed my late master Huanglong: in his forty years of responding to the world, in speech, silence, movement, and stillness, he never entrapped the monks of his day with facial expressions, polite manners, or literary talent. Only when someone had genuine insight and walked solidly upon the real and true would he accommodate and mold him with painstaking care. His prudence truly captured the style of the ancients; rare was anyone among the various quarters who could equal him. Therefore, in facing the assembly today, everyone takes him as a model."
