1.81

真淨聞一方有道之士化去。惻然嘆息至於泣涕。時湛堂為侍者。乃曰。物生天地間。一兆形質枯死殘蠧似不可逃。何苦自傷。真淨曰。法門之興賴有德者振之。今皆亡矣。叢林衰替用此可卜（日涉記）。

When Zhenjing heard that a person of the Way from a certain region had passed away, he sighed with sorrow to the point of weeping. At that time, Zhandang was his attendant, and thereupon said: "Among things born between Heaven and Earth, once physical form is omened, withering away and decaying seem impossible to escape. Why trouble yourself with grief?" Zhenjing said: "The flourishing of the Dharma gate relies upon virtuous persons to invigorate it. Now they are all dying away. By this, the decline and decay of the monastic groves can be foretold." (Rishe ji)
