湛堂曰。靈源好閱經史。食息未嘗少憩。僅能背諷乃止。晦堂因呵之。靈源曰。嘗聞用力多者收功遠。故黃太史魯直曰。清兄好學如饑渴之嗜飲食。視利養紛華若惡臭。蓋其誠心自然非特爾也（贅疣集）。

Zhantang said: 'Lingyuan was fond of reading the classics and histories; he never rested even briefly while eating or breathing, stopping only when he was able to recite them by heart. Huitang therefore scolded him. Lingyuan said, "I have heard that those who expend great effort reap distant success." Therefore Grand Historian Huang Luzhi said, "Brother Qing's love of learning is like the hungry and thirsty craving food and drink; he views profit, support, and ostentation as a foul stench." His sincerity was natural, not merely put on for show.' (*Zhuiyou ji*).
