2.40

佛鑒謂詢佛燈曰。高上之士不以名位為榮。達理之人不為抑挫所困。其有承恩而效力見利而輸誠。皆中人以下之所為（日錄）。

Fojian said to Xun Fodeng: "People of lofty character do not take fame and position as glory; people who understand the principle are not distressed by setbacks and suppression. Those who exert their strength only upon receiving favour, and show sincerity only upon seeing benefit, are all acting as those of mediocre capacity and below." (Rilu)
