高菴表裏端勁風格凜然。動靜不忘禮法。在眾日屢見侵害殊不介意。終身以簡約自奉。室中不妄許可。稍不相契。必正色直辭以裁之。衲子皆信服。嘗曰。我道學無過人者。但平生為事無愧於心耳。

Gao'an was upright and steadfast inside and out, with a commanding and awe-inspiring demeanor. In action and stillness he never forgot ritual and regulations. When he was among the assembly, he was repeatedly subjected to offenses and encroachment, yet paid no heed at all. Throughout his life he maintained frugality for his own needs. In his room he did not grant approval lightly; if there was the slightest lack of accord, he would sternly and directly cut it short. The monks all trusted and submitted to him. He once said, 'My learning of the Way is not superior to others; it is simply that in the actions of my life I have nothing to be ashamed of in my heart.'
