When Gao'an resided at Yunju, whenever he saw a monk attacking another's hidden faults, he would calmly instruct him, saying, 'Things should not be this way. For people of the forests, the Way is the urgent task, and harmony is what cultivates the self. How can you indulge likes and dislikes and ruin another's conduct?' His painstaking care was like this. At first the master did not accept the appointment to Yunju. Foyan sent a letter encouraging him, saying, 'Yunju ranks first in the region south of the Yangtze; you can settle the assembly and practice the Way there. It seems you need not stubbornly decline.' The master said, 'Ever since the monastic groves began, among students ruined in integrity by titles and reputations of this kind, there have been not a few.' When Foyan heard this, he said, 'Gao'an's sense of when to serve and when to step down is beyond the reach of ordinary monks' (from *Jiwen*).
