3.39

山堂退百丈。謂韓子蒼曰。古之進者有德有命。故三請而行。一辭而退。今之進者惟勢與力。知進退而不失其正者。可謂賢達矣（記聞）。

When Shantang retired from Baizhang, he said to Han Zicang: “Those in ancient times who advanced had virtue and mandate; therefore they set forth only upon three requests, and retired upon a single resignation. Those today who advance rely only on influence and force. One who knows when to advance and retreat without losing what is upright may be called worthy and farsighted” (Jiwen).
