3.45

妙喜曰。愛惡異同人之常情。惟賢達高明不被其所轉。昔圓悟住雲居。高菴退東堂。愛圓悟者惡高菴。同高菴者異圓悟。由是叢林紛紛然有圓悟高菴之黨。竊觀二大士。播大名于海上。非常流可擬。惜乎昧於輕信小人諂言惑亂聰明。遂為識者笑。是故宜其亮座主隱山之流為高上之士也（智林集）。

Miaoxi said: “Likes, dislikes, agreements, and disagreements are common human feelings; only the worthy, farsighted, and luminous are not swayed by them. Formerly, when Yuanwu resided at Yunju, Gao'an retired to the Eastern Hall. Those who loved Yuanwu detested Gao'an; those who agreed with Gao'an differed from Yuanwu. Because of this, the monastic grove fell into turmoil, forming factions of Yuanwu and Gao'an. When I observe those two great beings, they spread their great renown across the seas, beyond what ordinary sorts could measure. What a pity that, blinded by light belief in the flattering words of petty people, their clarity of mind was confounded, and they were ultimately ridiculed by discerning people! For this reason, it was appropriate that people like Lecturer Liang and Yinshan were regarded as lofty, noble gentlemen” (Zhilin ji).
