3.44

妙喜曰。祖超然住仰山。地客盜常住穀。超然素嫌地客意欲遣之。令庫子行者為彼供狀。行者欲保全地客。察超然意抑令供起離狀。仍返使叫喚。不肯供責。超然怒行者擅權。二人皆決竹篦而已。蓋超然不知陰為行者所謀。烏乎小人狡猾如此（可菴集）。

Miaoxi said: “Zu Chaoran resided at Yangshan. A tenant farmer stole grain belonging to the permanent property of the saṃgha. Chaoran had always disliked the tenant farmer and intended to dismiss him, ordering the storehouse postulant to write a confession for him. Wanting to protect the tenant farmer, the postulant perceived Chaoran's intention and forced the man to submit a departure petition instead, while sending him back to make an outcry, refusing to submit a confession of fault. Chaoran was furious that the postulant had usurped authority; both were merely flogged with a bamboo slat and that was all. Chaoran did not realize that he had been secretly outmaneuvered by the postulant. Alas, how deceitful petty people are!” (Ke'an ji).
