雪堂謂晦菴光和尚曰。予弱冠之年見獨居士言。中無主不立外不正不行。此語宜終身踐之。聖賢事業備矣。予佩其語。在家修身出家學道。以至率身臨眾如衡石之定重輕。規矩之成方圓。捨此則事事失準矣（廣錄見獨居士者即雪堂父也）。

Xuetang said to Master Hui'an Guang: "When I was twenty years of age, I met the lay practitioner Jiandu, who said: 'If there is no master within, one cannot stand; if there is no rectitude without, one cannot act. These words should be put into practice throughout one's entire life; then the undertakings of sages and worthies will be complete.' I kept his words in mind: cultivating myself at home and studying the Way after leaving the household, even to leading the assembly by personal example, just as the balance-scale determines weight and the compass and carpenter's square form circles and squares. If one abandons this, then in every matter one loses the standard."
