Wan'an said: “Lately I have seen that when literati, surveillance commissioners, or prefects enter the mountain and lodge there, the next day they instruct an attendant to notify the elder: ‘Today, ascend the seat especially for such-and-such an official.’ On this point one should reflect thrice. Although recorded in ancient books, it was entirely because literati came seeking kalyāṇamitras; during interviews, the abbot briefly mentioned the intent of their outer patronage of the teaching gate and bringing glory to the springs and rocks. Since they were one of the household, speaking two or three plain words of the household caused them to generate reverence. Just as when Guo Gongfu and Yang Cigong visited Baiyun, or Su Dongpo and Senior Clerk Huang met Foyin, that was the model! How could it be done intentionally and errantly, bringing ridicule from those who know?”
